Would we be better off with a national health plan? Some people think so. 20/20 aired the best analysis I have seen about private sector versus government run health care. You can view it on You Tube in six segments without advertising. Health Care in the U.S. section 1 Health Care in the U.S. section 2 Health Care in the U.S. section 3 Health Care in the U.S. section 4 Health Care in the U.S. section 5 Health Care in the U.S. section 6 BIOTECHNOLOGY Are genetically modified foods and products bad for us? No scientific study shows any reason for concern. See this interesting report for more information. BENZENE Should we be concerned about benzene? Yes, when we are exposed to large amounts. Probably not in the amounts that most of us get every day. Go to the American Council on Science and Health for a discussion of this common chemical. MISDIAGNOSIS Doctors misdiagnose critical illnesses about 20% of the time according to a New York Times article. It is a good idea to get an unbiased second opinion whenever someone receives a critical diagnosis. By unbiased we mean one where the second doctor does not know the original diagnosis. This way he will not be biased towards the original opinion. You also may want your doctor to refer to Isabel, a diagnosis reminder system. This computer program was created by the father of a child who had been misdiagnosed and almost died as a result. If your doctor doesn't know about this system send him or her to this website for more information, http://www.isabelhealthcare.com/. INFLUENZA The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that flu vaccines are showing only a modest ability to prevent the flu, and antiviral drugs are quickly losing effectiveness as the viruses create resistance. See the New York Times article for more information. FAMILY COMMUNICATIONS Federal regulations now make it difficult for family and friends to get information while someone is receiving care from medical providers. CaringBridge and CarePages are among several new companies that offer free, personal, private Web pages that help with this problem. They will create a web page for you to give information and pictures so everyone you choose can stay informed. Click on the links above and check it out. FLUORIDE
We are beginning to see the old fluoride scare coming back again. Don't pay any attention to these unfounded charges. Fluoride is safe and it is highly effective in fighting tooth decay at the levels we get from our drinking water. For a more complete discussion of fluoride in the water click here.
